Emergency dentist in Leeds: NHS 111, urgent appointments and out of hours

If you have toothache, a swelling or a broken tooth in Leeds, this guide sets out what nhs.uk says to do, who to contact out of hours, what an urgent NHS appointment costs, and which practices listed on Dental Leeds say they offer emergency or weekend appointments, with the hours each publishes. It is not medical advice: for what counts as an emergency, read nhs.uk’s own page, linked under Sources.

What nhs.uk says to do

nhs.uk’s advice is that if you need emergency or urgent dental care you can get advice from NHS 111 or contact a dentist and ask for an appointment. You can call 111 or get help from 111 online. On dental problems, nhs.uk says 111 online can help with finding a dentist, or an emergency dentist if there is availability in your area.

You can contact any NHS dentist and ask for an appointment if you have symptoms, nhs.uk says; you don’t have to be a patient there already. Whether a practice can see you that day is up to the practice: each listing below links to the practice’s own website and phone number.

What counts as urgent, and when to go to A&E

nhs.uk lists the problems for which you should get an urgent or emergency dental appointment. In outline, they are a knocked-out tooth or an injury to your teeth; severe pain in your teeth or mouth that stops you sleeping or carrying on as usual and isn’t helped by painkillers; pain that painkillers help but which doesn’t go away; a swelling, lump or red or white patch in your mouth that is getting bigger or not going away; a mouth ulcer that has lasted 2 weeks or more; bleeding or severe pain after a tooth was recently taken out; and a broken or loose filling, denture, crown, bridge or veneer. The exact wording is on nhs.uk, which this guide doesn’t replace.

nhs.uk says to go to A&E or call 999 for a serious injury to your face or jaw, heavy bleeding from your mouth that won’t stop, severe swelling of your mouth, lips, throat or neck that makes it hard to breathe or affects your vision, or an injury to your head or face that has caused unconsciousness, vomiting or double vision.

nhs.uk also says a pharmacist can advise on painkillers and on some common problems with teeth and mouths. Dental Leeds doesn’t give medical advice and can’t say what is wrong with your tooth.

What an urgent appointment costs

nhs.uk says most adults need to pay for NHS dental appointments. The charge for urgent NHS dental treatment in England is £27.90 as nhs.uk lists it, the same as a Band 1 course of treatment. It is free for those who can get free NHS dental treatment: under-18s, under-19s in full-time education, people who are pregnant or had a baby in the last 12 months, and people on certain benefits or with an HC2 certificate; the full list is on nhs.uk and in our NHS guide.

A private emergency appointment is priced by the practice. Where a practice publishes its emergency fee on its own website, it is on the practice’s site, not here: the price on a listing is the lowest the practice publishes, usually a check-up.
